So, you can probably imagine that I’ve never set foot into a health food store. Just the thought of the odd stares alone has been enough to keep me away. However, my reference team at work is full of energetic and healthy folks who also love a good dose of chocolate. Good people. One of them brought a menu from the health food store up the street-they are called Winslow’s Health & Diet Center and they have an old fashioned diner in the back. The difference with this diner is the good is good for you! Natural, lots of veggies (icky) and you can even get french fries that are good for you. Whoa.
I made the trek one afternoon all by my lonesome. It is all part of Jen forcing herself out of her comfort zones and trying new things. I walked in and there is this little old lady at the counter who smiles real big and says, “howdy, can I help you?” Still intimidated, I smile and say thanks just heading to the diner. I wander around and I notice first thing that the place smells funny. Do all health food stores smell funny? Is that the smell of good health and nutritional supplements? Iadonna know.
The diner. It was pretty cool. There are lots of chairs and tables and a counter with bar stools. I placed my order still feeling like a fish out of water but thank god! they had magazines you could flip thru. I sat there waiting and read thru a magazine called Vegan Society or some such thing and immediately felt badly for ordering a turkey & avacado sandwich. Oops. I got my food and headed over to the drinks where I got a bottle of Honest Tea-Peppermint Nation. All nutural tea that was really, really good.
You know what I got out of it? I just wanted lunch and I could have spent a little less and got something semi-healthy at a chain restaurant but I didn’t. Instead, I learned a lot. I learned that health food stores may smell funny, they probably have kind people in them all the time and the food is good for you. I learned a lot about tea and the company Honest Tea and the significance of the tea I drank with my lunch. Check it out for yourself: Honest Tea.
How often can you say that your lunch choices helped you learn more about the world you live in?? Me either. So try it already!

p.s. What does this all have to do with cool people? We have a few people at work that are super fit and thin and you know this if you are fat-they don’t say it-but they are thinking that you are a slob and lazy. Anyways, one of them now talks to me after she found out I went to Winslows on a fairly regular basis. Ohhhh la la.
